What "Editorial" means on an image
Some images can be used in news and commentary but not in advertising.
An image marked Editorial can be used to illustrate news, commentary, criticism or education. It cannot be used to sell or promote anything.
That usually means the picture contains something the photographer has no release for: a recognisable person who did not sign a model release, private property, a logo, a branded product, a work of art, or an event with its own restrictions.
Practical version:
- Fine — a news article, a documentary, a textbook, a blog post discussing the subject.
- Not fine — an advert, a product page, packaging, a brand's social post, anything implying endorsement.
Images without the Editorial mark carry the releases needed for commercial use. The release status is written on every image page under Released.
